Typed Letter of Recommendation from Dr. George Washington Carver and signed by him for his assistant, Mr. A.W. Curtis, Jr. on Tuskegee Normal Industrial Institute letterhead.

Tuskegee Institute, Alabama. March 2, 1937 7.35 x 8.5, chipped, edge tears, missing a corner and small pieces from the sides, small bit of staining, creasing, removal marks. The letter is not addressed to anyone and reads in part: "Mr. Curtis comes to you as my personal representative. I urge you to use him to the fullest extent. I as sure you will like him." COMES WITH: Cancelled first day cover honoring Dr. Carver and addressed to Austin W. Curtis, torn, creased, light staining, one stamp chipped. Sold as a pair. In 1934 Dr. Carver met Curtis, a Cornell University graduate with a degree in chemistry. He accepted a position at Tuskegee and became great friends with Dr. Carver, even entering into a research partnership with him. Upon his death in 1943 Curtis was bequeathed the royalties from Carver's authorized biography.
