Keefer: Mechanicsburg (Pennsylvania) 1877-1878 Illustr, bound volume 13.5 x 11, 3/4 leather, marbled boards, spine gilt ruled with gilt lettering, each issue has four pages except for last issue which has eight. Covers very well worn, rubbed, scuffed/scraped, peeling, shelfworn lettering worn, inner hinges and text block cracked, a few loose signatures, toning, tears/edge tears light soiling, occasional tape repairs, occasional pencil #s/outlining, June 2 has a page with unevenly trimmed margin, June 16th in pieces, tape repaired, hard to tell if complete and published in a wider format than other issues causing damage, etc, overall good condition. Every issue contains columns on local communities: "Local Chowder" (Mechanicsburg), "Carlisle Drippings," "Harrisburg Splints," "Chips from Camp Hill," "Mt. Holly Correspondence." In June-September there's good coverage on the area baseball teams and in July 14th a couple of sentences on the town "Colored" boys starting up a team called "Ace of Spades." Articles on temperance, railroad strikes, the horticultural fair. Really nice two full-column ad for the John O'Brien Circus: "Nothing Like It Beneath the Sky! Overwhelming Attractions John O'Brien's Six Distinct Shows. . . Also, Thousands of Miraculous Museum Marvels, Operated by a Steam Engine." With illustrations of bareback riders, acrobats, tents and a giraffe. An interesting article on the annual meeting of The Allen and East Pennsboro Horse Thief Detective Society which explains how it got started, "the mode of detection" and minutes of the meeting. Lots of interesting items to read, local ones included. Good for local research as the citizens' complete names are used. SPECIAL BONUS: THIS WAS THE PERSONAL COPY OF ONE OF THE PUBLISHERS -- W.E. KEEFER. WRITTEN INSIDE THE FRONT COVER "THE PROPERTY OF W.E. KEEFER JUNE 26, 1878."
