Joannis a Sommeren, et al: Amsterdam 1685 104 (of 105) copper engraved plates + frontis + additional engraved title page, 21 x 15, old half vellum and boards, slightly raised bands, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, panels and label gilt tooled unpag. Covers extremely shelfworn, rubbed, creased, spotted, soiled, peeling, lacks top spine panel, last spine panel missing a piece, hinges and text block cracked, loose signatures, archival repairs (including to two plates which were missing pieces), lacks plate 2, tears (not all were repaired), toning, soiling, smudging, spotting, staining, attached to the front pastedown is a long note in Italian along with three names and birthdates from the 1850s, bookseller ticket of C.E. Rappaport. From "The Heirs of Hippocrates:" Bidloo, professor of anatomy at The Hague, was at one time physician to William of Orange. An English contemporary, William Cowper, furnished his 'Anatomy of Human Bodies' almost completely with engravings plagiarized from this book by Bidloo, who promptly and publicly excoriated Cowper in a published communication to The Royal Society. Before the days of copyright, this is one of the most famous instances of plagiarism in the history of medicine. . . These plates are considered among the finest illustrations of the Baroque period."
