Mounted Photo of a late 19th c. family posing in front of an oil well, handwritten note on back reads, "At the farm, first oil well, Penn. near Butler."

Pennsylvania nd (late 19th c Photo is oblong 3.25 x 4.25, mount is oblong 5 x 6, no photog listed. Photo has light soiling and staining, one of the faces, a woman, has her face covered with scratches and pencil marks, mount has worn corners, creasing, soiling on the back. Shown are two couples, one younger and one older (the parents?) with six children of varying ages, standing in the grass inside a fenced-in enclosure with an oil well in the background. Comes with three smaller photos, oblong 2.5 x 4.25, light soiling, creasing with a few scratches. There are two similar snapshots of a man watching oil shoot out of a well, one is marked on the back "Toyah Bell No. 2" and the other "Francis," third photo shows two wells, written on the back of that photo "Bell Wells 1 + 2." These photographs were with the mounted photo but we do not know if they are "related." In 1893, in Pennsylvania's Washington County new wells were drilled on several farms including Alexander Bell's. Are these Alexander Bell's wells? Sold as a lot.
