State of California Board of Public Works City and County San Francisco $1000 Montgomery Avenue Bond. No. 1159. Lith. Britton & Rey, San Francisco.

San Francisco 1873 Oblong 18 x 19, including coupons, light orange and black. Light creasing, lacks 35 coupons, unevenly cut else good/very good. Signed by the mayor William Alvord, the tax collector Alexander Austin and city and county surveyor, Richard H. Stretch. Central vignette shows a bird's eye view of San Francisco and above it the seal of the city and county of San Francisco, two side vignettes, one of a blacksmith and the other a farmer. These bonds were issued for the extension of Montgomery Avenue at its northern terminus. This road was to be diagonal which required the acquisition of a large amount of private property. Understandably, these landowners were upset and took the city to court and lost. The name of Montgomery Avenue was changed to Columbus Avenue.
