Printed tobacco tax law document, dated February 24, 1728, and signed by Karl VI of Austria, Holy Roman Emperor.

Austria 1728. Illustr of an eagle with crown above text on first page, embossed paper seal inside last page along with four signatures, 12 x 8, wraps, spine is covered with a narrow strip of marbled paper, (8) pp. Creasing, center section loose (lacks thread at lower section), offsetting on inner margins and on page opposite the seal, light soiling, very faint signature on back of last page else good/very good. Karl VI, 1685-1740, the second son of Leopold I, became emperor upon the death of his brother, Joseph I, whose only progeny were female. Karl VI requested that female children be able to inherit the throne, his having preference over his late brother's. (Karl had one son and three daughters). The request was granted only to be voided after his death. Karl VI was also the grandfather of a woman who would be one of France's most infamous queens, Marie Antoinette.
