Commemorative Carrie Nation Hatchet distributed by the Art Stove Co., Detroit. One side reads "1901 Cut Out the Whiskey Ax of All Nations" with the "face" of Carrie Nation on the blade. On the reverse "Buy Laurel Stoves and Ranges. Art Stove Co, Detroit,

Detroit 1901 Hatchet is 3.25 high, blade is 2" wide. Light staining and rubbing else good/very good. Carrie Nation first used a hatchet to destroy saloons in Wichita, Kansas, on December 27, 1900. She and other members of the Temperance Movement destroyed a large number of saloons in various cities in Kansas until March 12, 1901 when she announced that she would not destroy any more saloons but would wage war in her newspaper, "The Smasher's Mail." The Art Stove Company was located at 1543-1559 Russell, between Milwaukee St. and the Blvd., near the Grand Trunk Railway tracks. We were not able to determine if this company's owner/officers were pro-temperance. A nice souvenir of Detroit/Carrie Nation.
