Original Photo of the Dining Room of the Star Island Hotel in the St. Clair Flats area of Michigan.

St. Clair Flats. nd (1880s-early Cabinet card photo 4.5 x 5.25, no photog listed. Light wear and rubbing, removal marks on reverse else good. Written on the back "Dining room of Mrs. Slocumís hotel at St. Clair Flats. Meals were 25 cents with choice of any two of chicken, frog legs and fish. Probably around 1900." The Star Island Hotel was built in 1875 and was geared toward the middle class tourist. In 1878, Mr. and Mrs. James Slocum acquired the property and began to enlarge it. Several years later, in 1895, the hotel could boast of having 100 rooms and the largest dining room in the state of Michigan. The photo shows a long room which is sparsely filled with tables. A later published photo from the 1890s shows the same room but remodeled and totally filled with tables. So it is quite possible that this photo of Mrs. Slocumís dining room may be pre-renovation and earlier than the note on the photo indicates. St. Clair Flats was a very popular vacation venue as well as for hunting and fishing.
