Bruguiere, Francis.

THE ARCH OF THE EAST. Gelatin silver print with hand coloring.

13.5 x 10.5, light edgewear and creasing, a few light scratches, approx. 1/2" tear on right side, removal marks on reverse else good. Frances Bruguiere, born in 1879 in San Francisco, had established his own studio prior to a 1905 visit to NY where he met and became friends with Alfred Stieglitz and Frank Eugene. He was encouraged by Eugene to explore the aesthetic possibility of photographs. Stieglitz accepted him as a member in the Photo-Session. In 1919, he moved to NY and started up a studio where he did work for Vanity Fair, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He later moved to London where he died in 1945. Photo shows a classical statue under an archway; beyond is a courtyard and a nighttime sky. SIGNED BY BRUGUIERE IN PENCIL ON LOWER LEFT CORNER.
