"549,160 ROAD-ENGINE, George R. Selden, Rochester, NY, Filed May 8, 1879" (Selden automobile patent) in the OFFICIAL GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE, Volume LXXIII, October 1 to December 1, inclusive, 1895.

Government Printing Office: Washington DC 1896 Illustr, 11 x 7.5, 2164 pp + pp, later buckram. Covers worn and soiled, spine sunned, reinforced hinges loose, contents toned and edge worn with some finger soiling, a heavy, awkward book but fascinating nonetheless. Selden's patent (p. 848) describes a "road-locomotive,""liquid hydro-carbon gas engine," clutch, and "suitable carriage body located above the engine." Selden's patent was in dispute for many years after, until Henry Ford and friends won the case in court. Other interesting patents here too, plus trade-marks, etc.
