Macmillan and Co: NY 1884. 7.5 x 5, gilt ruled blue cloth, teg, 370 pp with ads, covers well worn, extremities bumped and fraying, hinges loose, old bookplate inside back cover, newspaper article affixed to rear fly, ink name of former owner on title page, contents a bit toned. TIPPED IN AT FRONT IS A TWO PAGE AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED FROM MATTHEW ARNOLD ON HIS EMBOSSED STATIONERY, dated Feb. 26, 1884, addressed to a Theodore Romeyn, thanking recipient for " . . . the interesting volume on your beautiful state . . . of all the states which I have seen I like none better than Michigan and Wisconsin . . . " Arnold also writes that he encloses an autograph for recipient's daughter. Also with AUTOGRAPH SENTIMENT ("With kind remembrances. . .") SIGNED BY MATTHEW ARNOLD glued to blank spot on title page. Matthew Arnold autographs are fairly uncommon. Arnold died in 1886.
