np (California) nd (early 20th E.W. Spencer, Lodi. 7.5 x 9.75, mount is 10 x 12, photographer's blindstamp in lower right corner of photo. Edges worn (esp corners), chipping, scattered spotting, soiling, light staining, ink name (Jenny Lind), backing paper torn and peeling else good. Shows a mill with three men posing on top, crushed stone (?) nearby, a few structures in the rural background. Jenny Lind was an unincorporated community in Calaveras County, on the north bank of the Calaveras River. Placer mining started up there as early as 1849. Calaveras County was organized in 1849-50. E.W. Spencer was a traveling photog in the late 19th century and had a permanent studio in Lodi from 1902-1914.
