Pre-Earthquake B&W Photography of the San Francisco Chronicle Building and surrounding area, c. 1894.

np (San Francisco) nd (c 1894) Oblong, 6.5 x 8.5, no photog's name or identifying notes. Light creasing, soiling, spotting, curling, pinhole in one corner else good. In the photo, the Chronicle Building at 690 Market, corner of Kearny, is at the right center, across from it is the Palace Hotel and across Kearney are several small businesses including Barrett and Sherwood jewelers and L. Monaco Photographer. L. Monaco was located at 702 Market St. (702 is prominently shown on the side of the building). L. (Louis) Monaco and his brother J.B. moved into that building in 1894, Louis died in 1897 and J.B. moved out in 1902 to set up business in North Beach. This area was totally devastated in by the 1906 earthquake.
