RHYMES OF CHILDHOOD.

Bowen-Merrill Co: Indianapolis 1891 Frontis portrait, 7.5 x 5, sumptuous yellow morocco binding with gilt-decorated corners in floral motif and craftsman-like decorated hinges with inlaid blue leather flowers, teg, silk endpapers, 186 pp with original cloth spine and front cover bound-in, extremities worn, leather darkening unevenly (esp spine), hinges a little loose, contents toned, but still a nice, deluxe binding. FIRST ED, FIRST STATE ("sunshiney," "cataba," etc.), WITH INSCRIBED "Yours Truly" AND SIGNED CARD BY AUTHOR JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY ATTACHED TO FRONT BLANK (upside down!). ALSO WITH BOOKPLATE OF EUGENE FIELD LAID IN LOOSE; WITH INSCRIPTION IN REAR OF BOOK BY EUGENE FIELD II: "This book was given to my father by James Whitcomb Riley," SIGNED BY EF II (dated Sept. 10, 1921). Eugene II made a living selling books he claimed were from his father's library, whether they were or not. . . why would Riley give Field a copy of his book and not inscribe it personally?
