Field, Eugene.

THE HOLY CROSS and Other Tales.

Charles Scribner's Sons: NY 1896 7 x 4.75, 3/4 green morocco, green cloth, teg, with nicely gilt-decorated spine with four little flowers of inset red leather, 293 pp, extremities a little worn and fraying, spine a little darkened, hinges loose, contents toned else a nice looking little book. WITH FULL PAGE INK INSCRIPTION TO WILLIAM JAMES BOOK (son of one of the famous Book Brothers of Detroit) FROM EUGENE FIELD II ON FRONT BLANK (dated Oct 22, 1926) QUOTING ONE OF HIS FATHER'S POEMS (". . . sleep little pigeon . . ."). ON A BLANK PAGE IN BACK IS ANOTHER INK INSCRIPTION FROM EF II (dated 1918) STATING THAT THIS BOOK FROM HIS FATHER'S LIBRARY, WITH EUGENE FIELD'S BOOKPLATE ON FRONT FREE END PAPER. Take Eugene Field II's statements with a grain of salt: the book, stated as being from Eugene Field's library, was published in 1896, one year after Field's death. Still, a nice copy with EF's bookplate.
