Cadell & Davies: London 1812 674 of 680 called for plates + 2 bonus plates, 8.5 x 5.5, half leather, marbled boards, spine gilt decorated and ruled, black spine labels with gilt lettering, bookplate in each volume of the Earl of Ilchester showing his coat of arms and motto "Faire Sans Dire" (deeds without words), pagination varies (all volumes collated, no text is missing). Covers well rubbed, shelfworn, leather scuffed/scraped, chipping to marbling, corners and spine tips bumped and worn, small tear to spine tip on Vol. II, rear outer hinge starting on Vol. VI, top page edges darkened, bookplates, inner hinges cracked, offsetting from plates, mild/moderate worming to seven volumes, light soiling, scattered light spotting, occasional small tears, paper irregularity resulting in some uneven margins and missing corners, a few plates have chipping and toning, free front endpaper almost detached in Vol. VII, rear blank page lacking in Vol. XIV else contents clean and very good. There is mispagination in Vol. XIV: 53, 54, 53, 54, 49, 50 . . . but there is no duplication of text and plate 86 is opposite the second p. 54. Also, several instances of plates being found in different locations than what was indicated in the Directions to the Binder." The list of missing/not bound-in plates are #359 Magot and #367 Mandrill in Vol. X, #192 Sandpiper in Vol. XVIII and #195 Whimbrel, #207 Common Gallinule, #231 Red Flamingo in Vol. XIX. The two bonus, not called for plates are in Vol. VI, there are two plates labeled #152, each with a different view of marmots and two of #158, each with a different view of raccoons. This is a very attractive set, contents are tight and very good with a grand total of 676 copper plates, of which there are four foldouts, two of which are maps of the continent. Scarce.
