Two B&W photos showing Grant's Canal: "Remains of Gen. Grant's Upper Canal at Duckport, La., across and above Vicksburg" and "Duckport, La. x (on photo) Location of Grant's Canal."

Duckport nd (early 20th 3.5 x 5.75, family (?) photos affixed to black paper with white lettering identifying the contents. Light soiling and creasing, black paper appears to have been part of a photo album page. The first of Grant's canals, previously known as the Williams Canal, had been expanded on the order of Gen. Grant in order to allow Union troops to be able to go downriber and avoid the guns at Vicksburg. Unfortunately, it ws not engineered properly and the canal flooded. The second (and last) of Grant's canals was at Duckport Landing and extended to Walnut Bayou. This canal would enable lighter boats to get past Vicksburg but by the time it was finished water levels had declined and the boats were not able to use it.
