Thomas Ellwood, a wild youth, came under the influence of the Quakers and was arrested several times for his beliefs. It was through the Quakers that he became acquainted with William Penn (who married a childhood friend of Ellwood's) and the poet John Milton. He studied with Milton and was also his "reader" as Milton was by that time totally blind. Milton lent him the manuscript for "Paradise Lost" and upon returning it inquired about a "Paradise Found." A few months later during a visit to Milton, Milton showed him a copy of "Paradise Regained." Milton said that it was totally due to Elllwood "This is owing to you, for you put it into my head by the question you put to me at Chalfont, which before I had not thought of." Second Edition (First was 1705).
