Germantown: Gedruckt bey C. Sauer. 1755 6.5 x 4, quarter calf with raised bands, 201, 38, 5. Covers very well worn, rubbed, peeling, corners bumped and worn, upper spine tip chipped, small hole in lower spine panel, ink names and staining/spotting to endpapers, lacks pages prior to page 5, lacks page 29/30 in the second book, missing part of the lower portion of the last page (interferes with text), lacks last blank page, toning, some creased corners, scattered spotting, mispagination (p 172 printed as 173, p 173 printed as 174, p 176 printed as 177). C. (Christopher) Saur (also spelled Sower) was born in Germany in 1693 and came to Germantown in the colony of Pennsylvania in 1724. In 1738, he began his illustrious career as a printer, becoming the first German printer and publisher in America. His most famous publicatoin was the Bible, "Biblia, Das Ist . . . " in 1743. It was the first bible published in German and except for the Indian version of the bible, it was the first American edition of the Bible. Roughly translated, the book titles are: "Different Old & Newer Stories of the Spirit" and "Descripton of Long Travels Out of Babylon after Bethel." Third printing. Scarce.
