Framed Advertisement "Central Department Y.M.C.A. Wheelmen Ten Mile Handicap Race, Garfield Track, Saturday, August 14, 1897. . . "

np (Chicago) 1897 Advertisement is approx 6 x 4.5 (not examined out of frame), creased, soiled, stained. Frame is 12 x 10, brown wood with gilt trim and an inner cloth "border," scratches, abrasions. The race was held under sanction of L.A.W. racing and rules, handicapped by George W. Ehlers, who would be the athletic director of the Central Y.M.C.A. of Chicago in 1905. In the 1890s a track was built in Garfield Park in Chicago, a half mile loop designed for speed and it attracted many well known cyclists. Chicago was one of the premier locations for bicycle racing.
