"The Fifth Edition." Each of the volumes is inscribed "Nicholas Roosevelt, American Embassy, Paris 1915." Roosevelt, a cousin (once removed) of Teddy, was a career diplomat; he was an attache at the American Embassy in Paris after graduating from Harvard in 1914.
