"COMMON" STOCK CERTIFICATE BOOK FOR THE (WILLIAM) SHARON ESTATE COMPANY, 1906-1926.

Sharon Estate Co: Jersey City, NJ 1906-1926 Oblong 8.5 x 15, half leather, cloth, containing 250 numbered stock certificates of which 37 are used, cancelled and re-attached into the book, book is worn with outer hinges chipping, extremities bumped and worn, hinges loose, some staining to eps and first/last certificates from leather, used certificates are cancelled with large triangle cut from bottom, some with red ink cancellations across face, but with gold embossed paper seals (Sharon Estate Co 1893), nice vignette of eagle holding lightning, first certificate has two $100 internal revenue stamps. Sharon, born in Ohio, came west to California during the Gold Rush of 1849 and ended up owning much of what is now San Francisco; he also owned a silver mine in Nevada (and took control of the Bank of California from his partner, William Ralston) and became a US Senator from there from 1875-1881. The stock certificates in this book, "common" stock valued at $100 a share were issued to Sharon's children (at about 10,000 shares each): Frederick W. (President of the Estate Company), Florence Fermer-Hesketh and Clara Newlands (whose husband was a Senator from Nevada as well), and various grandchildren, the Occidental Land Co, the Union Trust of Washington D.C. and several other minor players.
