Stewart, John "Walking" or "Travelling."

"THE WORKS OF J. STEWART" (spine title; includes: The Moral or Intelligent Last Will and Testament . . ., The Sophiometer; and The Scripture of Reason and Nature). Three volumes.

London 1810-1813 3 volumes. 4 x 2.5, full gilt ruled polished calf; all edges gilt, 576, (340), 356 pp, covers lightly worn, spines darkened with shallow chips at ends; hinges starting, large bookplate ("Mary J. Coulter") and old bookseller's catalog description in "Moral" (with associated toning opposite catalog description), "Sophiometer" closely cropped at end, "Moral" contains fold-out introduction that has one shallow tear, scattered foxing else a ncie but a bit fragile copy of this set of scarce volumes. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR TO "Mr. Miles with the Author's Compliments" in "Scripture." Also, with much ink writing on eps of all three volumes but writing is signed by W.A. Miles (on verso of "Scripture" title page), probably the controversial English political writer William Augustus Miles. To top all that, a pencil note inside indicates that this was from the Duke of Hamilton's library. Stewart was an eccentric English philosopher and writer, who earned his nickname by once walking from India to Europe.
