THE PLAN OF THE SOCIETY FOR EQUITABLE ASSURANCES ON LIVES AND SURVIVORSHIPS: Established by Deed, Inrolled in His Majesty's Court of King's Bench at Westminster.

London 1766 7.5 x 5.25, wraps in buckram case with paper label, 8 pp. Toned, spotted, removed, spine area archivally repaired, fold creased, lacking tip of corner of last page else good. An early insurance item, in which the organization of the Society for Equitable Assurances, which "is formed upon the model of the Hand-in-Hand and Union assurance offices," is described, the method and terms of insurance are explained and the trustees and directors are listed. The Society claims to introduce "a practice altogether new, the assurance of a provision established upon the chance of life" for children who reach maturity and adults who wish to provide "against a time when they may be either rendered incapable of that duty or labour which is their present support" (i.e., disability insurance). Owing to its size and to its somewhat ephemeral nature, this is a scarce item.
