Saleman's Sample (?) of a cast iron anvil with embossed name of Fulton Iron and Engine Works Detroit, Mich on one side and Cheney Anvil and Vise Co. No. 10 Pat Nov 187.

Detroit nd (1879-1880) 3 x 8, later black pain, recent green felt affixed to bottom. The "F" in Fulton and the "se" in Vise were left off. Good condition. In the early 1870s the Fulton Iron and Engine Works was acquired by James McMillan (U.S. senator from Michigan 1889-1902) and associates, in 1873 he was the treasurer, by 1880 he was its president. They were "founders" and machinists and in their heyday they turned out 150 steam engines a year. The business was located at the southeast corner of Woodbridge and Brush. Cheney Anvil and Vise Co., also of Detroit, had offices at 37 Moffat Building with the "works" at 54 Bates.
