Handwritten Marriage Certificate from Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario, dated February 5, 1858, and performed by A. Constable Geikie.

Berlin (Ontario) 1858. Approximately 8.5 x 8.25, mounted on linen and matted. Taped to the back of the mat, document is creased, spotted, soiled, missing tiny pieces, linen is soiled and starting to fray, light soiling, wear (esp corners) to mat. In part, "I hereby certify that this fifth day of February . . . solemnize the ceremony of marriage between John Irvine of Morningston (sp?) . . . and Eliza Jane Culberson of Elma. . . A. Constable Geikie. Minister of Presbyterian Church of Canada. With anti-German sentiments running high during WWI, Berlin changed its name to honor Britain's Minister of War, Lord Kitchener, who was killed in battle. The Scottish born Rev. Geikie immigrated to Canada in 1843 and in 1845 became an ordained minister of the Congregational Church. He later returned to Europe but returned to Canada in 1854 and became a Presbyterian minister in 1855 and settled at St. Andrew's Church in Berlin, Ontario. He himself was married in 1858. He eventually went to Australia where he died in 1898. He wrote several books during this time period. This marriage certificate is a nice bit of pre-Confederation history.
