Printed for the Author, by John and Paul Knapton: London 1749 Fory-two copper plartes, 8.25x5.25", gilt ruled mottled calf, blindstamped along edges, raised bands, red spine label, 417 pp. Leather scuffed/scraped (some a little tip of spine torn but has been glued down, cracking along outer hinges &loose, bookplate, ink initials on free front endpaper, endpapers toned, creased corners smudging, scattered light spotting, tears to the chart of the squadron of the "Southern Part of South America". In Septmeber of 1740 Anson left with a squadron of six ships to raid Spanish possessions in South America. Due to budget restrictions his crew was comprised of pensionsers& new recruits. Over a year later illness and bad weather had reduced the fleet to one ship and less than 200men out of a total of 961. He encountered the yearly ship Manila to Acapulco and despite the odds, managed to capture her and bring home a treasure to Englan. This treasure, thirty-two fully loaded wagons, was paraded through the streets of London with great fanfare. Fifth Edition.
