Real Photo Postcard of Traveling Companions Aboard the SS Dolphin (of the Alaska Steamship Company). Postmarked Ketchican August 17, 1912.

3.5 x 5.5. Postally used, light soiling and wear, removal marks on the back. From O.F. Nelson of Seattle to Miss Margaret Elliiott of Portland. Above the greeting he wrote "SS Dolphin Aug. 16-12." Shown on the front is a group of travelers, mostly appearing to be fairly well off and a few female immigrants. One of the immigrants has an embroidered skirt and is seated, holding a book on her lap. Printed on the side of the card, "The Happy Famely (sice) SS Dolphin" and at the corner "O.F.N." Behind the group is one of the Dolphin's lifeboats. The Dolphin was built in 1892 and was purchased in 1901 by the Alaska Steamship Company. This steamship company, which had enjoyed a prosperous time with the Klondike gold rush, had to reconfigure as the gold ran out. More ships were added and service was expanded from Ketchikan to Kotzbue for both freight and passengers.
