THE MONUMENT TO ROBERT GOULD SHAW: Its Inception, Completion and Unveiling, 1865-1897.

Houghton Mifflin and Co: Boston. 1897 Frontis photo of monument, 10 x 7.5, beveled cloth, 98 pp, a very very very rough copy with spine cover gone, hinges almost detached, covers heavily rubbed and stained, contents loose, edges chipped and mighty staining at each corner, ink names, pp detached . . . a miserable copy, but an important item. Shaw was at the head of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers, an all-Black unit (immortalized in the movie Glory); Shaw died in battle on July 18, 1863. The memorial was by Augustus St. Gaudens, and addresses reprinted here from the dedication include Major Henry Lee Higgins, Roger Wolcott, Josiah Quincy, William James, and Booker T. Washington.
