Five Western Union Telegrams from Claudette Colbert (c. 1929)

xxx Each oblong, 7.5 x 9, pencil notes, folds, wear (esp edges), paper browned. Also included is one carbon copy of a reply from recipient. All to a Lewis Gensler, 1482 Broadway, NY, the George M. Cohan Theatre. May 4, 1929: Asking for good news and threatening to send herself to a "watery grave"; June 21: at Monterey with the Elks; Aug. 5: had no news for weeks; Aug. 5 (again): will be in his office at 11:30 "hopeful and hungry"; Aug. 8: had attack of nervous indigestion. Colbert had been in O'Neill's Dynamo that spring, and would start making her name in Hollywood that year. Nice collection. Gensler wasa composer, producer and director; Colbert was in his production of See Naples and Die in 1929.
