Albert Bonnier: Stockholm 1929. 12 x 9", cloth, 159pp, well illustrated in color by Isaac Grunewald, red printed off-white cloth on beveled boards, no jacket, lightly soiled, some loss to paper label else vg. Reissue of Heidenstam's classic and revolutionary work first published in 1888. Heidenstam (1859-1940) was born to an aristocratic and wealthy Swedish family. Somewhat lazy in his youth, his parents sent ihim on a tour of the Middle East and Mediterranean. This first collection of poems represented and exotic alternative to the gloomy nature of Scandinavian literature at the time. Having a long and prominent career in literature, Heidenstam won the Nobel Prize in 1916. The illustrator, Isaac Grunewald (1889-1946) was a Swedish Jewish artist who studied under Matisse in Paris. He was a significant member of the Scandinavian group known as "De Unga" [the young ones], and later the Expressionist movement. This work was published in honor of Heidenstam's 70th birthday.
