Page three letter from Lemuel Shattuck in Detroit: "Enjoying so many great blessings, we hope that Detroit will not long deserve the appelation of 'Ignorant and vicious," news of the establishment of the University of Michigan, goes on to talk about schools: "…destitute of good schools and means of public worship as is usual with Protestants, the people have formed habits averse to the pure and benign principles of the Christian religion…"
