Washington 1828. 12.5 x 7.5", creases, tears (repaired), edge tears, missing a couple of tiny pieces from left margin, else goo. This order deals with the distribution of officers of the Corps of Engineers with their respective duties for the construction or maintenance of fortifications along the east coast of the US. Col. Gratiot, at this time chief of the engineering dept, had served as Gen. Wm Henry Harrison's chief engineer in the War of 1812, and was later appointed chief engineer of the Michigan Territory. At the end of the document, he crossed out his printed name and rank and signed w/rank below.
