(HEARST, WILLIAM RANDOLPH)

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY WILLIAM APPERSON, FATHER OF PHEBE APPERSON HEARST AND GRANDFATHER OF WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST.

Santa Clara, CA Sept 8, 1864. 2pp, 8 x 6.5", folds, stains, edge-chipping (esp. at folds), laminated, letter to an old friend, a Mr. Phillips, from back in Missouri. Aperson relates trouble in getting Phillips' address, who is in the Confederate Army & who is in the "Federal" army back in Missouri, and wishes Phillips would come & visit Apperson & family. Apperson had just followed his daughter Phebe out to California. Phebe & her husband had moved to California back in 1862 where he would strike it rich in silver. Also included is a CDV of Phebe, and a touching Autograph Letter Signed from a Miss Phillips (the daughter of the recipient of the Apperson letter) to William Randolph Hearst passing along the letter and photo, praising Phebe for her "...beautiful contributions to Education in our California." LA Nov. 29, 1935. Nice letters, nice content, obviously touching since Hearst kept this (purchased at a recent Hearst auction).
