Hemingway, Ernest.

TYPED LETTER SIGNED.

Cuba, July 12 & 17, 1957. 1 page, 11x8.5", on Finca Vigia letterhead, folds and minor wrinkles. Hemingway orders books from Mr. Stevens, with Stevens' notations when books were ordered and sent, forwarding this letter to a Mr. Kropotkin. SIGNED IN PENCIL BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY. The books were: THE WITCHES by Jay Williams, MASSACRE by Marshall Sprague, THE TURN OF THE TIDE by Arthur Bryant, THE INVASION OF FRANCE AND GERMANY by Samuel Eliot Morison, THE TRUMPETING HERD AND LEOPARD'S IN THE NIGHT by Guy Muldoon, OPERATION SEA LION by Peter Fleming, SOME REFLECTIONS ON HANGING by Arthur Koestler, and SECRET SERVANTS by Ronald Seth. "Kropotkin" was Igor Kropotkin, head of the Scribner's Book Store and later President of the American Booksellers Association; "Stevens" was evidently an employee of the store. Kroptkin is mentioned in Carlos Baker's ERNEST HEMINGWAY, SELECTED LETTERS 1917-1961 in a letter Hemingway wrote (dated only a month and a half before this one) to Wallace Meyer (an editor at Scribner's), in which Hemingway thanks Meyer for Kropotkin's name. A great piece, sloppily typed (by Ernie himself?), fitting nicely into the Hemmingway timeline.
