Illus; facsimile, 8.5 x 6", .75 re-backed leather with gilt-dec., spine & raised bands; marbled boards, t.e.g., 424 w/index, extremities bumped and scuffed, re-hinged hinges loosening, e.p.s. toned else v.g. Probably a First Edition, EXTRA ILLUSTRATED WITH 63 ENGRAVED PORTRAITS ADDED. Also bound-in are 19 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, DOCUMENTS SIGNED, ETC. BY IMPORTANT FIGURES OF THE TIME INCLUDING JAMES MADISON (cut signature, 3/27/26), COMM. (THOMAS) TINGEY (US Navy Commander in War of 1812, ANS (in third person), 3/6/12), R.R. GURNEY (leader of Liberia movement, ALS, 12/17/47), plus Congressmen Seaton, Mitchill, Rives (later Confederate), Frelinghuysen (Whig VP candidate 1844), and others. Each is placed within the book near his/her mention (except Madison's, which is at front of book). Portraits have scattered foxing, one ALS (B.L. Lear, son of 18th century diplomat Tobias Lear) is torn at a fold, others of varying condition, but all professionally handled. A wonderful, intimate look at the time
