Illus, 8.5x5.5", half leather w/gilt-dec spines; marbled boards, t.e.g. but most hinges broken, spine ends badly chipped, several spines taped--generally a miserable set which also includes A LIFE OF FRANCIS PARKMAN by Charles Haight Farnum, uniformly bound with the set. But, tipped into the Farnum bio is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER INITIALLED BY PARKMAN. Boston April 19, no year. One sheet, 6x8", one panel and "Parkman Apr 19, 1858" written on another. Folds, to a Mr. Shea (John Dawson Shea, the historian?): "I have but just rec'd the Register of Fort Du Quesne…I will examine it at once…" Signed "Yr. Friend F.P." DAB says that Parkman suffered a "renewed nervous crisis" in 1858 following the death of his wife and son. A total of 17 hideous volumes and one nice letter. The lot…
